Small Group Tours vs Custom Travel: Which Is Right for You?

Greetings Wanderers,

One of the most common questions I get from clients planning Europe and beyond is:

Should I do a small group tour, or should I plan a completely custom trip?

The answer depends entirely on your travel style.

Some travelers want the ease of having everything arranged for them. Others want total flexibility and a trip built entirely around their own pace and priorities.

Neither is better. The goal is simply choosing the right fit for you. Here is how to decide.

What Is a Small Group Tour?

A small group tour combines the structure of guided travel with a more personal experience than large bus tours.

Instead of 40 or 50 people moving through a destination together, these trips are usually designed for smaller groups, often 10 to 16 travelers depending on the company.

Think:

  • Guided sightseeing

  • Included transportation

  • Planned hotels and logistics

  • Local experts leading the experience

  • Built-in social connection with other travelers

Partners like G Adventures (shown left - our tour to Peru 2025) and Globus are great examples of this style of travel.

It is ideal for travelers who want less stress and more support.

What Is Custom Travel?

Custom travel is exactly what it sounds like.

Instead of joining a set itinerary, your trip is designed specifically around you.

That means:

  • Your preferred destinations

  • Your travel pace

  • Your hotel style

  • Your private guides and experiences

  • Your personal priorities

No preset schedule. No group pace. No one-size-fits-all planning.

This is especially valuable for milestone trips like honeymoons, anniversaries, family travel, or once-in-a-lifetime destination trips.

Small Group Tours: Pros

  • Less Planning Stress

    • Much of the logistics are already handled, including hotels, transportation, and major sightseeing.

    • This makes planning feel significantly easier.

  • Great for First-Time International Travelers

    • If Europe feels overwhelming, a small group tour offers confidence and structure.

    • You can focus on enjoying the destination instead of managing every moving piece.

  • Built-In Community

    • Many travelers enjoy meeting others along the way, especially solo travelers or couples who like the social side of travel

    • Tours often bundle hotels, transfers, guides, and experiences together, making budgeting simpler and often more cost-effective.

Custom Travel: Pros

  • Complete Flexibility

    • You choose where you go, how long you stay, and what experiences matter most.

    • No rushing through destinations you wish you had more time in.

  • More Personal Experiences

    • Private guides, boutique hotels, hidden experiences, and unique access are often easier to build into custom itineraries.

    • This is where travel starts to feel truly special.

  • Better for Special Occasion Travel

    • Honeymoons, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and luxury trips often benefit most from personalized planning.

  • Your Pace, Not Someone Else’s

    • No matching a group schedule.

  • No early mornings you did not choose.

    • No experiences that do not interest you.

Which Option Costs More?

Custom travel is often more expensive because it is fully tailored and usually includes more private services.

But that does not automatically make it better.

Sometimes a small group tour offers stronger value and a better overall experience depending on your priorities.

The best option is not about budget alone.

It is about fit.

Sometimes the Best Answer Is Both

Many of my clients actually do a combination.

For example:

  • A small group tour through Italy

  • Followed by a custom extension in Greece

Or:

  • A river cruise through Europe

  • Followed by private days in Paris or London

This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds.

And often, it creates the strongest trip.

How I Help Clients Decide

This is where working with a travel advisor matters.

I help clients determine:

  • Which style fits their goals

  • Which suppliers are the right match

  • Where a private experience adds value

  • Where a group option makes more sense

It is never about selling one over the other.

It is about building the right trip.

Final Thoughts

Small group tours and custom travel are both excellent options.

The best choice depends on how you want to experience the destination.

If you want simplicity, structure, and social connection, a small group tour may be perfect.

If you want flexibility, personalization, and deeper experiences, custom travel may be the better fit.

And sometimes, the best trip includes both.

That is where the real magic happens.
