Guided by Angel and Pina, we explored local villages, watched cigars being rolled, sampled fresh sugar cane, and tasted locally made wine. We ended the day at Maria’s home, where she and her daughters showed us how they produce coffee and chocolate directly from the plants on their farm. Getting to sample the results was, of course, the best part! It was heartwarming to bring school supplies for the local children, adding a meaningful touch to an already incredible experience. It took nearly two weeks, but I’m back from Greece and ready to give you the low-down on everything from our first group trip! A HUGE thank you to everyone who joined me on our recent adventure through Greece! This small group trip was one for the books, from the ancient wonders of Athens to the stunning island landscapes. Here’s a quick look at where we went, what we did, and how we made lasting memories together. Plus, I’m excited to announce the possibility of future trips to Scotland or Italy—keep reading for more details! Our journey, called Highlights of the Greek Islands, began with everyone arriving in Athens at their own pace, allowing time to explore the city independently. One special group activity was a private sunset trip to Cape Sounion, where we visited the breathtaking Temple of Poseidon, built around 444–440 BC. Afterward, we enjoyed a traditional Greek dinner at a local tavern and ended the evening with gelato. Our official tour kicked off on Friday when we met our G Adventures CEO (Chief Experience Officer), Stelios, a native Athenian. His excellent insights into Greek culture and history added so much depth to our experience throughout the trip! At sea, you’ll have greater chances of seeing whales, otters, seals, puffins, and more. On land, you’ll find bears, moose, wolves, and Dall sheep. This isn’t to say you won’t have a chance to see each on one or the other, but you’ll have an enhanced experience by doing both. On my trip, I visited the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Girdwood and the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. Each is a must for animal lovers! One thing that I absolutely loved is the genuine interest and focus on animal care at both. The SeaLife Center has an incredible founding story, stemming from the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989, which ultimately led to its funding. This isn’t SeaWorld or some show for tourists. Some, like Glacier Bay, are popular sites for cruises, while Wrangell-St. Elias holds the title of the largest with an amazing 8 million acres. During my time in Alaska, I was able to visit Kenai Fjords and Denali National Park. In Kenai, we enjoyed taking a day cruise where we spotted humpbacks, orcas, otters, seals, bears, sheep, puffins, and so much more. We then stopped for lunch on Fox Island and continued touring the great fjords. In Denali, we were treated to views of the mountain on our drive up. Now, this might not sound like much, but I discovered that it's estimated only 30% of visitors actually see the mountain. Why? Denali is big enough to create its own weather, so even when you think it's clear, you may never see it. Once at the park, we took a guided tour with a certified driver-naturalist. This is how most visitors experience the park. With limited luxury properties throughout the state, I was fortunate to spend time at a few, including Alaska’s only ski resort, Alyeska. Due to the limited roads and diverse landscape, transportation here varies from multiple airports and seaplanes to trains. You’ll want to try something new! On my bucket list: a seaplane (seen left). Between accommodations and transportation, be prepared for casual attire and a good packing list – something I ensure all my clients have before heading out. Culinary Delights Alaska has an amazing culinary scene! While much of the food is imported, what they grow is fantastic, thanks to those long summer days. Check out the wild berries in August and September, a hit with locals and bears alike. About 20% of the state’s population are Alaska Natives, with five groups of indigenous people. Each region has its own unique history, but a great place to start learning is at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. While there, I listened to a Native Athabaskan speak of her childhood in Alaska, watched a dance performance, walked through life-sized reproductions of traditional Native dwellings, and admired crafts and handiwork from Native artists. Don’t Skip a Land Tour If you’re going to travel all the way to Alaska, fully experience the state by visiting both land and sea. This will give you the best of both worlds: the small seaside towns only accessible by ship, and the grand expanse of mountain ranges and glaciers only accessible by train or bus. Ziplining down the mountainside multiple times, we lost count amidst the adrenaline rush. The Sapona Shipwreck, a famed dive site in Bimini, tells the story of the island's history. Once used to store illegal rum during US prohibition, the ship ran aground in the Great Hurricane of 1926. We navigated rough waves to explore the wreckage before heading to Triangle Rock to witness the reef and nurse sharks. Surprisingly, the sharks were full-grown, making for an exhilarating experience- I was about done in 20 minutes. Our crew and captain ensured a safe and enjoyable morning with insights into the sites and good humor. Post-excursion, we unwound at The Beach Club at Bimini, Virgin's private retreat, for an afternoon of relaxation before our return to Miami. While we enjoyed wandering the city, you can also stop at places like the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Churchhill Downs, Kentucky Derby Museum, or the Muhammad Ali Center. Day Two This morning, head out along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. From its official site, It has drawn more than 2.5 million visitors from all 50 states and 25 countries in the last five years. They state, “Bourbon lovers can stop at a few of the distilleries or all 42—there is no wrong way to experience it. Every journey is personalized and requires planning, as some distilleries are as far as 70 miles apart. Head an hour south to Mammoth Cave National Park. According to The National Park Service, it is the world’s longest-known cave system. It’s earned the titles of UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. It is another item on the agenda that you will want to plan because these sell out weeks in advance, and no trip to the park is complete without a guided cave tour. While you can sometimes go on a “Self-Guided Discovery,” I would not recommend this. This tour will only take you into a few of the caves. To truly grasp the length, size, and overall history of the caves, look into the “Historic Tour” (2 miles- great for families) or the “Wild Cave” tour (5.5 miles and extremely difficult- for the adventurers). The park does offer over 80 miles of trails above ground, so use the afternoon to hit one or two before heading back to the city. Other sites to take advantage of in the park include Crown Fountain, Boeing Galleries, Millennium Monument at Wrigley Square, BP Bridge, and Lurie Garden. In the summers, you’ll find plenty to do at Jay Pritzker Pavilion and an ice skating rink for the whole family in the winter. From there, walk the famous Magnificent Mile, which hosts upscale shops and excellent restaurants, or head to The Sky Deck for an afternoon viewing of the city from above. I define them as a short two- to three-day trip with little travel time (less than 5 hours). Why should you go? When saving for big Bucket List trips, it can be challenging, so weekend getaways give me more to look forward to throughout the year! I get more out of my weekend when I am away; I’m not lying around the house, running the same old errands, or watching television. I want to surround myself with a new environment and visit as many places as possible. Psych Central states, “For some, travel is not about seeing new places, but rather escaping old ones that have a negative impact on our lives.” Where should you go? For fellow mid-westerners, here are some easy ideas to get you out this season for a weekend getaway: Niagara Falls (American or Canada)- Canada is the largest producer of Ice Wine, so taste one of the 50-something wineries around for an afternoon. Hocking Hills State Park- Logan, Ohio - Head to one of the local spas or connect with nature on the Whispering Cave or Cedar Falls tails. Both are great during the winter months as well! Frankenmuth, Michigan- Head to this Bavarian-style city that offers local shops like Zak & Mac’s Chocolate Haus or Frankenmuth Cheese Haus. Pocono Mountains- Pennsylvania- Try your hand at skiing or relaxing at a spa. Chicago, Illinois- There are endless options here for our big-city lovers. It can be draining, and yes, it can be overwhelming even to think, “Where could I squeeze that in?” The picture on the RIGHT is a 24-hour clock. My challenge is to print it out and color it in your average day. Start with the time you sleep and work, then move forward with other activities you know you can count on. Is your clock complete? Check your average time spent on your phone (settings-screen time-boom) and work from there. Even if it is an hour or two a week, side hustles can be a great way to earn some extra cash for dinners in France or gelatos in Italy. The Striezelmarkt is the market’s proper name which comes from the dessert Strüzel or Stroczel, the name of a type of cake sold at the market. It’s said to be the oldest, dating back to 1434. There were Winter Markets before it but this is the first Christmas Market. As you stroll along the “Winter Mile” of Striezelmarkt, you can check out the nearly 50-foot Christmas tree and shops. The markets tend to be less crowded during the day, but if you come around dusk, you’ll be able to see all the lights displayed. While shopping is the top priority here, a close second is the food vendors. In 2021, I ventured out to Glacier National Park to hike with friends, and when I returned home, I quickly started Googling what national parks I could drive to from Ohio. I settled on Shenandoah for a 2022 adventure and was thrilled when friends decided to tag along for a long weekend. We headed down on a Friday and arrived home on a Monday evening. I would have loved another day or two of hiking, but you can fit some great things in the long weekend. We did one 10-mile hike and a few shorter 2-4-mile ones on the other days. While we stayed in the nearby town of Luray, there were plenty of things to do and places to eat and drink. If you are nearby, be sure to check out Hawksbill Brewery. They have a “Pay It Forward” wall where you can purchase a drink for a friend. If we had taken our dogs, one was from “One Aussie to another!” Today though, I wanted to highlight one of the best hikes in the park: Old Rag Mountain. Old Rag Mountain is underlain by Old Rag Granite, hence where you get the name. The hike to the summit is a 9.4-mile loop with a 2,582-foot elevation gain. Every time you think you’ve reached it- you haven’t! Visitors will need an Old-Rag day-use ticket (along with your NP car pass) to hike this, so plan when venturing out.
